Obituary of Alvina Adelaide (Frohock) Gushee
[Death Notice]. 1927, April 29, Appleton. Alvian A., Widow of Stephen J. Gushee, aged 87 years, 11 months, 29 days. Funeral Sunday at 2 o'clock from the church.
May 25, 1927. Mrs. Alvina Gushee was born in Northport, April 30, 1839, the youngest daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Frohock. When she was a child the family moved to Lincolnville where she resided until her marriage, which took place Oct. 15, 1863, when she was united in marriage to Stephen J. Gushee of Appleton. They resided at different times in Waldo, Head of the Tide and Lincolnville, but in 1871 they moved to Appleton on what is known as the Ames Farm, then in the Spring bought and moved to the home in the village, where they spent their remaining years. Four children were born of this union, Thomas F. [sic E.] of Camden, Ralph A. of New York City and Elizabeth Newbert and Mary Ness of this place. For many years Mrs. Gushee was active in the social life of the town and an interested member of the Grange, I.O. of G.T. [Independent Order of Grand Templars], Rebekahs and other organizations. A great lover of books, she was the owner of the largest private library in this section of the state. Always generous and kind-hearted, she performed many deeds of kindness known only to herself and the recipient. She was a faithful wife, a loving and indulgent mother and a neighbor always ready to help in the times of sickness and sorrow until failing health caused her to lead a quiet life. The past three years she has been faithfully cared for by her youngest daughter, Mrs. Mary Ness and family, who have always lived at the old home. Mrs. Gushee died April 29, and had she lived one more day, she would have been 88 years of age. Besides the four children, she is survived by seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Funeral services were held at Union Church May 1, Rev. O.W. Stuart officiating, and H.M. Bowes in charge [funeral director from Union]. The flowers were many and beautiful, showing the esteem in which the deceased was held. Interment was in the family tomb in Pine Grove Cemetery.
