William J. Collins, retired mine superintendent and a former merchant here, was found dead in a field near his home at the Wainwright bridge Monday afternoon [11 Apr 1938] at 2 o'clock. Mr. Collins had been in good health despite his 70 years, and the end came unexpectedly. A heart attack was the cause. He had been working in the field after dinner, and when his daughter, Mrs. William Coyle, living nearby missed him, she went to investigate. He was lying where he had fallen, and according to Coroner Chas. N. Gaskill he had been dead about an hour when found. He had complained occasionally of his heart but didn't think it was serious. He is survived by three sons, Howard and Raymond Collins, prominent Wellston clothing merchants, and Edward Collins of Wellston, and also four daughters, Mrs. Harry R. Smith of New Carlisle, Mrs. Cecil Pierce of Mingo Junction, Mrs. Cecil Evans of Cleveland, and Mrs. Coyle, east of town. He has one brother, Frank Collins at Radcliff. Another, John, is dead. He was born at Lincoln Furnace, a son of John and Martha Collins, and lived about all his life in and around Wellston. He was mine boss at the old Domestic mine and at Wainwright was considered an expert miner. Later he had a store in the Eagles building and at Wainwright and for a few years was a traveling salesman for a packing house.
