Sam Elliott was a veteran of both World War II and Korea - He enlisted in the Army and completed basic training in October of 1945. On 2 September 1945, Japan formally signed the instruments of surrender onboard the USS Missouri.

Sam was stationed in Japan between 1945 and 1946 as part of the occupational forces. Afterwards, he returned to the United States and was placed in the active reserve corps.

In 1951 he was called back into service and sent to Korea as part of the 537th QM Dept, Eighth Army. He was promoted to Corporal and served in Seoul, South Korea, during the Korean War. He returned to the US at the end of the Korean War in 1953 and was honorably discharged.

A handful of Samuel Elliott's ashes are buried underneath this memorial stone.
