He moved to upper Cowlitz prairie with his parents in 1872. He married the former Rhoda Pratt in 1895, and continued to live on Cowlitz prairie until a few years ago, when they moved to Toledo. Together they had four daughters, Mrs. Eva Morse and Mrs. Lydia Stilson of Winlock, Miss Lydia Mathews of Los Angeles and Mrs. Cecil Morris of Aberdeen, and one son, Ernest Mathews of Toledo. Five grandchildren, and brothers, Joe and Gus Mathews of upper Cowlitz, George Mathews of Ryderwood, Henry Mathews of Winlock, and three sisters, Mrs. John Cheney of Lewis, Mrs. Sam Layton and Mrs. Josephine Rumsey of Tacoma. Rev. Smith officiated at the services, with burial in Toledo cemetery.
