John A. Morris was the oldest of four children of Joseph and Mary (Brock) Morris, born in New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio in 1844. On September 4, 1862 he enlisted in Company B, Ohio 126th Infantry Regiment. He was mustered out on May 18, 1865 at Cincinnati, OH. John was wounded in the left eye during the awful Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia. On October 28, 1869 he married Margaret Frances Ayers, oldest daughter of Philander and Nancy (Eagon) Ayers. Their only child, a son (Meredith) was born in 1871. John and Margaret lived their lives out on their farm of about 141 acres in the Rock Hill area just southwest of Flushing, Belmont, Ohio. He died in 1919 in Flushing, and was buried in the Rock Hill (Baptist) cemetery there.
