W. E. DARROW ILL ONE WEEK; PASSES AWAY
William Elijah Darrow, retired farmer and member of a pioneer Oak Hill family, died
Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at his home, 401 North Cherry street, from a brief illness
with heart trouble, aged 76 years, nine months and 29 days.
Mr. Darrow was stricken ill one week before his death and his condition became gradually
worse until death relieved him at the above-stated time.
William E. Darrow was born in the Oak Hill district, east of this city, Jan. 21, 1860, a son
of the late William Augustus and Malvina Darrow, nee Simmons. His father was born in
Oak Hill and his mother at Red Bud. He was united in marriage at Nashville to Martha A.
Green, Dec. 30, 1896. They lived on a farm in Oak Hill until 1924 when they retired and
moved to this city. Two children were born to the union, both of whom survive with the
widow. They are Irene, wife of Ray Steinheimer, of Jacksonville and George G. Darrow, of
Joliet. Also two brothers, George L. Darrow, of this city; Joseph A., of Webster Groves,
Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary A. Peach, of Edmonds, Wash.; Mrs. Fannie D. Oakland, of
Chicago; Miss Lora A. Darrow, of this city and two grandchildren, Ray Darrow
Steinheimer and Don Carson Steinheimer.
Mr. Darrow was a devout member of the Baptist church where he served as a deacon,
trustee and Sunday School teacher.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Schwarz chapel to the Baptist church
were he reposed in state from 1 o'clock to 2:30 o'clock when services were conducted by Rev. A. J. Rendleman. The esteem in which Mr. Darrow was held was attested by the many
relatives and friends who crowded the church to capacity at the final rites. Rev. Rendleman
paid a glowing tribute to the exemplar character and his interest in religious work.
Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.
