SAMUEL SKINNER BRITT died August 6, 2007 at the age of 89. He was born May 8, 1918 in Perquimans County, N.C. to James Thomas and Elizabeth Elliott Britt. Sam was part of the "Greatest Generation" and served his country from 1941-1945 in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 8th Infantry Division, 56th Field Artillery and his service included battles in France, Belgium and Germany. Despite the war, he loved the German people, especially their strudel and black bread. After the war Sam went to work for his brother, Jim Britt and Britt Construction Co. laying utility lines that would later serve many of Houston's neighborhoods. Years later, Sam went to work for the City of Houston Public Works Dept. as an inspector. He took great pride in his work making sure the job was done right. Sam loved fishing and digging oysters in Matagorda Bay. His love started a rich family tradition that endures to this day. Going to the bay will never be the same without him. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James, Fenton, Carl, Alvin and sister Mary Louise Sutton. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Evelyn and their children: Thomas A. Britt and his wife Judy and Debbie Holzheauser and her husband Steve. "Paw Paw Sam" will be especially missed by his grandchildren Becky & Travis Britt, Justin "J.D.", Brittany & Craig Holzheauser. Sam is also survived by his brother Julian Britt and his wife Colzie, sisters Helene Britt and Katherine Jones and sisters-in-law Lela Britt and Jeanne Britt as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Sam was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Shelby, N.C. & St. Marks Methodist Church in Houston. The family would like to thank the staff of Vosswood Nursing Center and the hospice care provided by Odyssey Health Care. Their efforts to comfort him in his final days were a source of great comfort to our family. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Heights Funeral Home. Funeral Services: 10:00 AM, Thursday, August 9, 2007 in the Chapel of Heights Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Health Care of Houston, 2636 South Loop West, Suite 210, Houston, TX 77054.
