Ottis I. Bedwell, age 96, of Lynden, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, August 6, at Whatcom Hospice House in Bellingham.

The son of John and Mattie (Smith) Bedwell, Ott was born in Ellington, Missouri on January 30, 1916. He grew up in Missouri and in 1942 enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served during World War II.

Following his discharge, Ott married Ruth Moore in St. Louis on April 30, 1946 and in 1949 they moved to Lynden.

He was first employed as an auto body repairman at Syl Weidkamp's Garage in Lynden and then at Seabrook Foods where he retired as Plant Manager in 1981.

Ott also served his community by serving on the Lynden Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years, four of which he was the Chief. He was a member of Lynden Community Church (formerly 1st Baptist) and also a member of American Legion Post #10 in Bellingham. He enjoyed camping with his family and playing card games with friends.

Preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 2003, Mr. Bedwell is survived by his children Jean Littlefield of Lyndem, Cheryl Bruce Bajema of Nooksack and William Lynn Jones of Blaine; twelve grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Graveside services with full military honors will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, in Greenacres Memorial Park, Ferndale.

Memorial funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Lynden Community Church, 7th & Grover Sts. in Lynden, with Pastor Jim Green officiating, a reception will follow at Meadow Greens, 301 Homestead Blvd., Lynden.

Memorials in Ott's honor may be made to Whatcom Hospice Foundation; 2806 Douglas Ave, Bellingham, WA 98225.

Services are under the care of Gillies Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Lynden.
