Born on March 27, 1941 in Logansport, he was the son of Howard and Clara (Hitchens) Helvie. On January 19, 1980 he married Sherry Leonard, she survives.
Gene was a 1960 Royal Center High School graduate.
He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran who served two tours in Vietnam aboard the USS Davis and the USS Saratoga.
Gene also retired from Liberty Mutual Insurance in Lewiston, Maine.
He was a member of Center Presbyterian Church, Royal Center, a life member of V.F.W. #3790 and American Legion #60. Gene was also a member of the USS Davis Association, Retired Enlisted Men's Association and the Fleet Reserve Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Helvie of Logansport, father, Howard O. Helvie of Logansport, his children, Douglas E. Helvie (Anna) of North Carolina, Jody Nichols of Wyoming, Kimberly Hewitt of Colorado, Christopher Helvie of Colorado and Barbara Bartling of Colorado, step son, Darren Winters of Maine, and brothers, Robert Helvie (Joan) of Valparaiso, and Wayne Helvie (Twila) of Columbia City. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by mother, Clara Hitchens.
Graveside Services with Military Rites will be performed at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Davis Cemetery in Burnettsville with Pastor Horace Smith.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Homes, Royal Center Chapel.
