Annette 'Nita' Benson

Native Astorian, 87 Annette C. Benson , of Astoria, 87, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in Astoria.

Mrs. Benson was born Jan. 10, 1918 in Astoria to Hans Johan and Anna Greta Bedari Lilleeng.

Mrs. Benson was raised in Astoria, graduating from Astoria High School in 1936. She lived in Portland, working for the Packard Company in the early 1940s, returning frequently to Astoria.

On August 10, 1941, she married James Chris "J.C." Benson . After living in Roseburg for a short time, they returned to Astoria where Mr. Benson was employed by - and then owned and operated - Heavy Hauling Company and J.C. Benson Log Trucking. Mr. Benson preceded her in death in 2000.

Family members said Mrs. Benson enjoyed baking and was known for her apple and blackberry pies. She was a passionate swimmer, continuing to swim laps at Sunset Pool in Seaside into her 80s. An eclectic collector, she collected dolls, glassware and pottery. She also enjoyed traveling and traveled to Norway in 1988 for a family reunion.

Mrs. Benson is survived by one son, Jim Benson of Astoria; three daughters and one son-in-law, Judy Benson of Astoria, Jan Johnson of Portland and Joyce Benson and Paul Lydolph of Prior Lake, Minn.; two sisters and one-brother-in-law, Agnes Hamilton of Clackamas and Margaret and Richard Eichenlaub of Milwaukie; five grandchildren, Todd Biddle of Portland, Troy Biddle of Redondo Beach, Calif., Erin Benson of Gearhart and Beth Coats Tubbs and Alyssa Coats, both of Seattle; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Benson was preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Hill of Vancouver, Wash., and Liz Colby of Oregon City; and two brothers, Victor and Thomas Lilleeng, both formerly of Astoria.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary.

Concluding rites and vault interment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton. A reception will then be held at the Holiday Inn Express in Astoria.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clatsop County Historical Society or to Clatsop County CASA, both in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
