Sarah Ellen was born on 10 Mar 1743 in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. She was the daughter of Martin Hardin (1716-1779) and Lydia (Waters) Hardin (1720 – 1800). Sarah Ellen Hardin married Benjamin Hardin (1738-1866) at Fauquier, Virginia, United States in 1767. Benjamin Hardin was the son of Major John Hardin (1710-1789) and Catherine Marr Hardin (1711-1786).

Benjamin and Sarah Hardin were the parents of the following known 10 children: Kate Hardin 1767 – 1840; Lydia Hardin 1768 – ; Sarah Hardin 1770 – 1864; Rosannah Hardin 1773 – 1823; Polly Hardin 1775 –; Cassandra Hardin 1778 – 1799; Martin L Hardin 1780 – 1848; James Hardin 1782 – 1782; Benjamin Hardin 1784 – 1852 and Warren Hardin 1786 – 1866

One of Sarah Hardin's sons, Benjamin Hardin was a United States Representative from Kentucky, member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, was elected as a Republican to the Fourteenth Congress, to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses and served as the Secretary of State of Kentucky 1844–1847. (Her son, Benjamin's picture is on this page). One of Benjamin Jr. Hardin's daughters, Lucinda Barbour married John L. Helm who became governor of Kentucky and held other government jobs. Their son (Benjamin & Sarah Hardin's great grandson) Benjamin Hardin Helm was married to Abraham Lincoln's wife's half sister, Emilie Todd. He was also a Confederate Brigadier General in the Civil War.

Hardin County, Kentucky was named after one of Sarah's brothers: Col. John Hardin. One of Sarah Hardin's nephews was Martin Davis Hardin (June 26, 1837 – December 12, 1923) was a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Martin D. Hardin was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, the son of John J. Hardin. He was a family friend and protégé of Abraham Lincoln (It is said that it was at the Hardin family home that Lincoln first met his wife, Mary Todd). Hardin graduated from West Point in the Class of 1859, and was an aide to Robert E. Lee in the hanging of John Brown soon after.
