He was born March 16, 1923 in Plainville, IL the son of Edward H. and Hannah M. Schafer Althoff. On January 17, 1975 he married Dorothy A. Rupp in Quincy, IL, and she survives.
Mr. Althoff graduated from schools in Plainville and Payson. He spent all of his life in farming and swine production as owner and partner in Althoff Brothers Operations. He was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ and the Adams County Farm Bureau. His hobbies included wood working, building projects, bookkeeping and veterinary work with the animals. Mr. Althoff was also a nurseryman who enjoyed designing landscaping for his own home, acreage, and buildings. He retired in 1996.
Survivors also include 2 sisters, Carlene E. Althoff, and Esther J. Althoff, both of Plainville; one nephew, Carl G. Althoff and his wife Joyce, Plainville; one great niece, Stephanie L. Clinging and her husband Chad and their children Cassandra, Shelby and Chandler, Quincy; one great nephew, Preston Althoff and his wife Megan, Plainville. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Carl H. and Russell E. Althoff.
Services will be Friday at 2 pm in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Welch and Rev. Robert Gnuse officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 1 pm – 2 pm at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Home Harmony Meadows or Southern Court Units.
