Dorothy Agnes Althoff, age 89, of Plainville and formerly of Payson, died on Saturday, August 4, 2012 in Blessing Hospital.

She was born March 9, 1923 in Quincy the daughter of Herbert G. and Elizabeth F. Besling Rupp. She married Virgil J. Althoff in Quincy on January 17, 1975. He went to his heavenly home on April 18, 2005.

She was a 1941 graduate of Quincy High School and Gem City Business College. She was a firm believer in Norman Vincent Peale's power of positive think and in a higher power. She recognized this in dealing with Virgil's Alzheimer's disease, which she described as a "dread disease".

Before her marriage, Dorothy was a bookkeeper and accountant for Merchant Candy and Tobacco, Walter Chatten Company, and various other businesses in Quincy and Hannibal, MO. She last worked for with Jim Schoch, owner of J& J Marine in Quincy.

Dorothy will be remembered for her friendliness, her kind and caring ways, her charity, and her generously worded thank you's. She had many extended and adopted families at Good Samaritan Home, where Virgil spent his last five years of his life. She cared for him daily while there.

Survivors include a nephew, Rev. Robert Gnuse and his wife, Beth; a great niece, Rebecca Gnuse; two great nephews, Adam J. and John Robert Gnuse, all of New Orleans, LA; many cousins; and many good longtime friends and supporters namely, Nancy and Joe Liesen, Ruby Frohn and Judy Chapman, members of Virgil's family, especially Carl Gene and Joyce Althoff, as well as Jim Rapp and Sandy Weibring. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Herbert J. Rupp, and one sister, Margaret (Peggy) E. Gnuse, and their spouses, Frances Rupp Gnuse and Karl Arthur Gnuse.
