Dorothy Bellflower was born in Henryetta, OK to Ernest and Pearl Bellflower. She was first found in the 1940 census as a 17 year old housekeeper for an elderly couple, J H and Margaret Hubble in Eufaula, McIntosh, Oklahoma In 1941 she married Howard C. DeCamp. Army Camps were being built in various places in California and Howard had found a job working on the new camp being built in San Miguel, CA. There was no housing available in the area. The newly weds had a small travel trailer, and they rented a spot in an orchard being converted to a campground. One of Howard's cousin's husbands was working at the same army camp. They were newly married, too. Their first home was a tent in the same orchard. Even though the facilities were primitive, the foursome spent a joyous time in this honeymoon era of their marriages. After about a month the job terminated and the cousins went south, and Howard and Dorothy went north. The girls wrote letters for a while, and they each gave birth to their first child within a week apart. Dorothy and Howard were parents of a baby boy, born on March 18, 1942. They named him Gideon, for his paternal grandfather. Sadly, Dorothy and Howard's marriage did not survive. It ended in divorce, and the girls never saw each other again.
