Slippery Rock Woman is Dead

Miss Maude C. Bingham, 79, Was One of Original Faculty Members

Miss Maude C. Bingham, aged 79, a member of the original faculty of Slippery Rock State Teachers college, died at her home, 168 South Main street, Slippery Rock, at midnight last night following an illness that had confined her to her home since last December.

Miss Bingham and Prof. I. N. Moore, who is still living at his Slippery Rock home, were the last of the original faculty at the college. She had taught at the college for 26 years, retiring in 1915.

Miss Bingham, who was one of 13 children of W. S. and Mary Ann Bard Bingham, lived her entire life in Slippery Rock with the exception of the years she attended college at Edinboro State Normal school and Valispariso Normal School in Indiana.

She became a member of the faculty of Slippery Rock, when the college was opened in 1899, teaching geography and history. During the last ten years of her association with the faculty, she was a specialist in geography.

During the years that she taught at the college and lived in the dormitory, she served as assistant dean of women.

In 1907 she extended her knowledge of her chosen field by an extensive tour of Europe.

Upon her retirement from the college in 1915, Miss Bingham did not cease serving the community in which she lived. She became an active member of the W. C. T. U., the Women's club and the Missionary society of the Presbyterian church.

Miss Bingham's only immediate survivor is a brother, F. P. Bingham of Slippery Rock. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at her late home in Slippery Rock. Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in charge of the Rev. H. Cameron McClure, pastor of the church. Burial will be held in the Slippery Rock cemetery.
