On 7 February 1966, Specialist Four Ralph Byrd was serving with B Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, in Phu Yen Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SP4 Byrd was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
