Woman, 82, Hit, Killed By Car
Lincolnite Dies on Bridge
A dark blue coat button and a pair of shoes about 50 feed apart on wet
pavement on a lonely stretch of 14th just south of Cornhusker Highway told the story of a Christmas Eve tragedy.
May Jenny Daugherty, 82, of 967 Nance was apparently walking south on 14th across the Oak Creek Bridge when she was struck and killed.
The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m.
The woman, clad in a dark color coat, was apparently stuck at the south
end of the bridge and dragged by the south bound car 110 feet, according to
Officer Gordon Cox.
There is a sidewalk on the west side of the bridge that is raised above
the street several inches, but was mostly covered with snow. There are no
sidewalks along 14th in the area. There are metal railings on each end of the bridge, which protect the bridge walk approach.
Rather than walk through the snow and slush on the walk and on the
shoulder of the road, Mrs. Daugherty apparently walked into the street. She
apparently walked around a puddle of water near the end of the bridge, placing her directly in the path of the car.
An off duty police officer, Robert Edmunds, said that he was following the
car that struck Mrs. Daugherty. Edmunds said he heard a noise when the car
ahead of him reached the south end of the bridge and thought that the car had
struck a metal railing and blown a tire. Edmunds said that when he got to the woman, she had no pulse.
Waller, the driver of the car that struck the woman, was taken to police
headquarters, tested and questioned. Deputy County Atty. Ron Lahners said that Waller was released subject to call. Waller told police that he was returning to work after eating supper at 943 Belmont.
Officer Edmunds said that Waller told him at the scene of the accident
that he did not see the woman until the car had struck her.
Two years ago Christmas Eve Lincoln suffered a traffic fatility when a
Lincoln City Lines Bus struck Erlberto Solano, about 55, at 13th and O.
The death of Mrs. Daugherty was the first traffic fatility since September 20, and Lincoln's first pedestrian fatality of the year. Mrs. Daugherty is survived by a son, Emery Allen, 57 of 940 Nance.
After Thomas died, she and Grandpa Dougherty used to live in Raymond.
