Retired Sergeant Fred D. Almond

Clyde / Marion - Retired Sergeant Fred D. Almond of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, age 85, of Marion and a former resident of Clyde, passed into the arms of his Lord and Saviour at the John F. Keever Solace Center surrounded by his loving family , on Thursday, August 2, 2012.

Mr. Almond was born October 4, 1926 in Andrews , North Carolina to the late Charlie Almond and the late Nettie Derreberry Almond. He had resided in Clyde for 35 years before moving to Marion in 2009 to be near his family. Mr. Almond was a United States Army veteran, having served as a military policeman and he retired in 1980 from the North Carolina Highway Patrol as a Sergeant with 31 years of dedicated service. Mr. Almond was a Haywood County Magistrate for 15 years, retiring in 1995 and was a member of Clyde Masonic Lodge #453. He attended Glenwood Baptist Church in Marion . He was an avid fisherman and will always be remembered as a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Almond and a sister, Geneva Hembry.

Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Nellie Johnson Almond ; a daughter, Kathy Kaylor and her husband, Scott Kaylor of Marion ; a son, Philip Almond and his wife, Caron Almond of Old Fort ; grandchildren, Lieutenant USMC Matthew Kaylor and his wife, Katie Almond of Camp Lejeune , NC , Kristen Almond of Canton and Jeremy Stewart of Old Fort; sisters, Tommie VanHorn and her husband, Fred VanHorn of Georgia, Ruthie Stamey of Lake Junaluska and Mabel Anderson of Robbinsville.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 6, 2012 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home with the Reverend Jim Brewer officiating. Entombment will be in The Horizon at Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service.
