Francis B. Gustin, 73, of 47 Fisher St., retired baritone and church choir director, died Friday in a local nursing home.

Born in Bethlehem, N.H., he was a 1918 graduate of Amherst High School and Massachusetts Agricultural College, now University of Massachusetts, in 1922. He operated Gustin Nursery in North Amherst for many years. He was a member of North Congregational Church, where his father, the late Byron F. Gustin was pastor.

He directed and sang in North Congregational Church choir many years and sang in other churches and public and private events. He sung in choirs at Edwards Church and Baptist churches in Northampton, First Congregational Church, Holyoke, and was director of music at Easthampton Congregational Church. [Interesting factoid: portions of the 1969 movie "Silent Night, Lonely Night", starring Lloyd Bridges and Shirley Jones, were filmed in Amherst. Both Francis and Ida appear very briefly in the background of one of the scenes. They are part of a small group of people singing Christmas carols on the town common.]

Also, he was active in Holyoke and Northampton Florists and Gardeners Association. Besides his wife, the former Ida Moore, he leaves two sons and a daughter.

The funeral will be Sunday afternoon in North Congregational Church. Burial will be in North Amherst Cemetery. Douglass funeral home is in charge. Donations may be made to the North Congregational Church flower fund.
