John Harvey Scott died suddenly at the home of his son William A. Scott. He married Mary A. McChesney who was a niece of his father's second wife Margaret McChesney. John Harvey's mother, Elizabeth Nicklin, died in 1875 when he was seven years old. He worked in the newspaper business beginning with the Oregonian in 1891 (where his father Harvey was editor for 40 years). He then worked for the Spokane Review and returned to Portland where he worked as a cashier for the Telegram, a job he held for 20 years.

John and Mary Scott had two children:

William Harvey (married with 1 or 2 children)
