Fourth child of Gottlieb and Barbara (Aliesch) Gammeter.

Obituary: Pfc. Edwin Gammeter is Drowned in Germany
Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Gammeter have received a message from the War Department saying that their son, Pfc. Edwin G. Gammeter died in Germany, on April 30, as a result of drowning. (He was on a boat crossing a river in Germany, helping people escape, and the boat was shot at and sunk.)
Pfc. Gammeter enlisted in March 1941, was in the Aleutians for two years and had been in action in Germany since January with the First Army, 9th Division under General Godges.
He was home on furlough in November, 1944, on his way from California to Ft. Benning, where he received further training. While he was at home the chessefactory occupied by his parents burned and Edwin lost all his clothes, army records and orders, but received new supplies through the Red Cross and Truax Field.
The official message read as follows:
Wash. D.C.
Gottlieb Gammeter, R. 3, Mt. Horeb,
"The secretary of war desires me to express his deep regret that your son Pfc. Edwin G. Gammeter died in Germany April 30, 1945, as result of drowning, confirming letter follows." J.A. Ulro, Adj. Gen.
Edwin has another brother in service, Lester Gammeter S 1/c in the Pacific war area.
