Henry J. Hastings wasa City estimator. He was an advocate of and played a key role in the city's purchase of Belle Isle for a park in 1878. In 1879, the city of Detroit paid the heirs of Barnabus Campau $200,000 for the island. Henry was severely censured for putting such a big debt on the city. His son was Edward Hastings.
