Obituary:
"WALLACE "WALLY" JENKINS
Wallace V. Jenkins Dr. Wally Our devoted and beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Wallace Vernon Jenkins, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the age of 81. He just "wore out" after a long life of service.Wally was born April 3, 1928 in Salt Lake City to Melba Dye Jarrell and Joseph Vernon Jenkins. His younger sister Barbara died at the age of 3. His father died when he was 13 years old leaving him to help provide for his mother and younger brother Jerry. Wally attended Bryant Junior High where he had fond memories of mowing the lawn strips on 600 East and scooping ice cream at Fendalls on South Temple. During his late teens his mother married Roy Barrell in the Salt Lake Temple. A year later their son Kay was born. The three brothers loved fixing up old cars. Wally's favorite car was his green 1965 Triumph Spitfire. He attended East High where he was the Lt. Col. in ROTC. Wally missed his high school graduation in 1945 to enter the United States Navy. He served as a Petty Officer 3rd class during WWII. Wally attended the University of Utah where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity class of '50 and was known for his elaborate, mechanical house decorations for Homecoming. He graduated with a B.S. degree in Physics and then started medical school. At the U of U, Wally dated Anna Lou, a Chi Omega, daughter of Clinton and Annette Dinwoodey. Lou and Wally were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 31, 1951. He earned his doctorate degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1955. Lou and Wally moved to Minneapolis for his residency at Minneapolis General Hospital. They moved back to Salt Lake in 1959 where Wally began his medical practice at Memorial Medical Center as an internist and cardiologist. He taught at the medical school and was an attending physician at LDS Hospital. Wally was on the Board for 15 years and served as National Vice President during his service. Lou and Wally were married for 52 years until Lou's passing six years ago. Together they raised five children: Diane, Carolyn, Nancy, Julie and David. Wally always encouraged and supported his children's talents and desires. His life was centered on serving others and being a caring, thoughtful physician. Wally was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities, his favorite being a Gospel Doctrine teacher for over two decades and a faithful home teacher. Wally was humble and quiet, yet always had a good comeback. Even though he had health challenges in life, he met them with a positive attitude and dignity. Most of all, Wally will be remembered for his gentleness, his never-ending generosity, his service and his unconditional love. Wally leaves behind his much loved family: children, John and Diane Baldwin, Rick and Carolyn Stevens, Nancy Krieger, Bob and Julie Crook and David Wallace and Yumiko Jenkins, brothers, Jarrell Jenkins, M. Kay Barrell and sister-in-law Susan Barrell. Grandchildren who affectionately called him Bubba, Matt and Brittany Foster, Brian and Ally Nelson, Parley and Angela Baldwin, Sam Baldwin, Alma and Nicole Smith, Alicia and Monique Stevens, Isaac and Caroline Krieger, Zoe and Maia Crook. Great-grandchildren Abby Foster, Jagger and Vienna Smith. Wally was preceded in death by his dear wife Lou, parents and sister. The family would like to thank Dr. Ann Richards, his dedicated nurse Joan, all the caring aides at Home Caregivers, as well as Gloria and her sweet aides Alma, Kandi and Nicole, and the entire staff and Wally's friends at the Parklane. Special thanks to Wally's dear friends and neighbors who have been so loyal and helpful throughout his life.
