Mrs. East died peacefully Friday, August 3, 2012. She was born March 19, 1915, near Nahunta, Georgia, the daughter of William Reubin and Mary Jane Harrell Strickland. She grew up on the family farm where she and her 14 brothers and sisters enjoyed childhood surrounded by loved ones.
She was happily married for 71 years to Joseph Kenyon "Ken" East, who died in 2011, at age 97. From the day they wed she devoted her life to supporting him, his career, and their family.
In 1938 she graduated from Berry College where she was vice-president of her senior class and associate editor of the yearbook. She and her husband met there and were highly recognized for their lifelong service in alumni affairs and contributions to Berry.
She taught school first in Marion County, SC, and later in Horry County, SC. In 1955 she was in the first class of teachers in South Carolina to become certified to teach "Special Education", which she taught for four years.
Since 1959 Mrs. East was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia. As a young girl she assisted her father in his church work and had continued serving The Church in many capacities such as youth leader, counselor, Sunday School teacher and homebound missions.
Mrs. East was proud of her Strickland family heritage and the contributions of family members to our country in peace and war back to the American Revolution. Three of her sons served in the military. On July 4, 2012, she and a friend raised her flag, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and waved to boaters as they passed her lakeside home. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Granby Chapter, serving in several offices and committees.
She and her husband greatly enjoyed the 40 years they lived at Lake Murray, observing activity on the lake and working with their flowers and vegetable garden. They especially loved watching the birds that lived on the lake, visited their feeders and nested in their birdhouses. She was a member of the Audubon Society and supporter of Riverbanks Zoo.
Mrs. East strived to follow the Berry College motto, "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister" and to do "right" in every aspect of her life. She died with the Peace that she had done her very best in all things.
She is survived by her sons, Bill (Jane), Ken, Jr. (Linda), Louis (Nikki) East of Columbia, SC, and Larry (Bonnie) East of Aiken, SC; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Evelyn (Hal) Crawford, and predeceased by 13 brothers and sisters.
The Family thanks all who cared for Mrs. East, especially Robbie Futch and Cynthia McDuffie.
