Asa Bradbury was born in Penobscott County, Maine on November 22, 1805. He came to Gallia County with his father, Joseph, in 1816. Joseph Bradbury had taken his pay for service in the American Revolution in land grants to Ohio in Cheshire Township. In 1820, the first Methodist church was built on the family farm.
On October 21, 1835, Asa married Miss Electa B. Harding, born in Ontario County, New York. Three of their sons served in the Civil War and were honorably discharged.
In 1842 Asa founded the village of Kygerville, named after the creek that flows near the settlement. Some of Asa’s brothers became merchants in the village.
Asa Bradbury was a strong abolitionist and one of the major “Underground Railroad Movement” operators at Kygerville before the Civil War. He died on November 27, 1890 and was buried in the Kygerville Cemetery.
