Ray was the son of Simon Armstrong and Mary Driskell. According to the 1910 US Federal Census, the family lived in Zella Township, Comanche County, Oklahoma. Ray was sixteen and his younger sister, Jennie, was ten.

He enlisted in the United States Army September 15, 1918 and served at Field Hospital 258, 15 Sanitary Train, 15 Division. Honorably discharged January 31, 1919 , he held the rank of Private.

Ray married Violet Worthington. They were the parents of at least four sons: Jack, Percy Worthington, George Paul and Ray Perry. Perry Armstrong, lost his life on Luzon in the Philippines in 1944.
