James was the son of James Edward Halstead Sr and Margaret "Maggie" Jones. Death Certificate states buried at Smith family Cemetery in Vanceboro, it was originally believed they meant Mack Smith in Pitt County, however a recent photo and discovery revealed he was buried at Joseph Smith Cemetery.
