SHREVEPORT - Services for Mrs. J.D. Cox, 84, of Shreveport will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday June 20, at the Frost Chapel of First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. N. O. Pugh of First Baptist Church, retired. A Eulogy will be given by Mr. C. Bickhman Dickson. Burial will be at Forest Park Cemetery. Coach Cox died Sunday June 18, 1989, at his residence following a brief illness. A native of Stranger, Texas, he had been a resident of Shreveport for 61 years. He moved to Shreveport in 1929 from Quanah, Texas. He was a teacher and coach at Byrd High School from 1929-1967 when he retired. Coach Cox served as head coach in three sports, Basektball from 1934-1946; Baseball 1944-1960; Fooball 1960-1967. He coached many successful young men. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class and a member of the Order of the Elks. Coach Cox was a member of the Caddo Coaches Hall of Fame (1974) and Louisiana High School Hall of Fame (1986). He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David Cox and Dolores McFerren Cox of Nacogdoches, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Elaine Holleman and Robert Holleman of Lafayette, La.; four grandchildren, Kathy Cox Tague and husband, Rock of Topeka, Kansas, Steven Cox of Waco, Texas, Bobby Holleman and wife, Shari of Lafayette, Dottie Holleman of Lafayette; one great-grandchild, Kari Elizabeth Tague of Topeka. Pallbearers: Jimmy Harrison, Nicky Lester, John Rogers, B. J. Harrell, Charles Ravenna, John Childers, Blocker Thornton, Richard Gay. Honorary Pallbearers: Members of the Fellowship Class of First Baptist Church. Visitation at Wellman Funeral home will be 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Monday; 12 noon-2 p.m. Tuesday. The family requests memorials may be sent to the Louisiana Baptist Childrens Home or the Shreveport Rescue Mission.
