Charles was the first-born son and first American-born child in the family. His parents Charles McLaughlin and Elizabeth McCall and older sister Sarah, all from Aghanloo Parish, Limavady, County Derry, Ireland, came over in 1830 and probably landed at Philadelphia. The young family made their way northwest to Clarion Co., Pennsylvania. Charles was named for his father. The family worked in lumber and then oil.

Charles fought for Pennsylvania in the Civil War. He was wounded, mustered out, and sent to a Philadelphia hospital where he met Margaret Agnes Ruan. He returned to active duty after healing and fought at Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, he and Margaret married and began their trek through the oil boom towns of Western Pennsylvania and Illinois, arriving and staying in Mannington WV until their deaths.

DNA testing and documents in Clarion, PA show that Charles' father, Charles Sr., sponsored two men and their families over from Aghanloo - his brothers Michael (memorial #27667138) and James. Michael, in turn, brought over their parents Patrick and Mary. Patrick and Mary's descendants live all over Western Pennsylvania.

A fourth man, Daniel McLaughlin (who worked at the iron furnace), settled Clarion with his wife and children at the same time as Charles Sr. His family moved away from the area after the 1840 census. The family believes that Daniel was also Patrick and Mary's son, and that Daniel's descendants will be found through further DNA testing.
