Lula Jane Carlton was the daughter of Thomas Clingman Carlton 1854 – 1950 and Millie Louise Triplett 1850 – 1942.
Lula's siblings were: Martha Carlton 1871 – 1873; Mary Ada Carlton 1871 – 1955; Sarah Caroline Carlton 1876 – 1938; Leroy (Lee) Carlton 1878 – 1964; Harley Andrew Carlton 1882 – 1969; Laura Carlton 1883 – 1897; Robert C. Carlton 1886 – 1976 and China Esther Carlton 1893 – 1966.

Lula Jane Carlton married Joseph Edward Austin on Oct. 11, 1909 in Lenior, Caldwell, North Carolina. From this union the following children were born: Elva Ester Austin 1910 – 2006; Norman Charles Austin 1912; Clarence Donald Austin 1914 – 1999; Sterling Ray Austin 1917 – 1967; Vernon Robert Austin 1919 – 1919; Vena Berro Austin 1921; Edward Austin 1923 – 2012; Reuben Gatley Austin 1924 – 1947 and Bennie Austin 1930.

In the 1920 census Lula and Joe were living in a rented house on a farm where he was working as a manager, in Mulberry, Caldwell, North Carolina. Lula had given birth to their first four children.

In 1930 they were still farming in Mulberry, Caldwell, North Carolina. Seven of their nine children were living.

The 1940 census revealed that Lula and Joe owned their home, valued at $800.00 in Mulberry, and Joe and the 4 oldest boys were working in a Furniture factory, Joe as a Kiln Tender, he had worked 43 week in 1939 and had earned $516.00. Ray, the oldest boy has worked 39 weeks at an income of $463.00 as a Glass Worker. Berro was a Tail Boy, working 43 weeks for $516.00. Edward was a Tail boy and Reuben was a new worker, and they didn't report their earnings.

The death certificate for Joe Austin revealed that he had be admitted into the State Hospital at Morgantown in Burke Co., North Carolina with Chronic Brain Syndrome with Senile Brain Disease with psychotic reactions.

Joe's spirit returned to God on Sept. 28, 1955 from myocardial infraction due to coronary thrombosis. His body was taken to the Greer Funeral home in Lenoir, North Carolina, to be prepared for burial at the Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery in Lenoir.

Lula gathered her family and friends around her at the burial plot that had been selected for her beloved Joe, to bid him farewell.

She was buried next to her dear husband, with some of her children and relatives buried near by, all "Resting in Peace" (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman.)
