He was a farmer and carpenter. An early settler on the prairies of Bureau Co. He was also an active church member.

He was originally buried in Firth, NE, but his family had his body moved. He reportedly died after being poisoned by his third wife, Louisa (Dean) Seely, whom he married in Dec. 1883 in Bureau Co., IL.

He married Orpha Cree ca. 1832 in VT. He married Charlotte Dean on Nov. 15, 1837 in Medina Co., OH.

Children: Alexander, Edwin, Mrs. Orpha Seaman, Mrs. Selina Curtis, Mrs. Marinda Porter, Mrs. Caroline Rockwell, Elvira, James, and Martha.
