The sudden death of Peter N. Mewes at 1:30 p.m. Saturday came as a shock to his many friends upon the announcement of his passing which occurred while working in his yard at his home, 803 South B street. Mr. Mewes had been enjoying good health until stricken with a heart attack on that day. He was born in Holstein, Krumwehl, Germany, on April 17, 1849, and had attained the ripe old age of 77 years, 6 months and 13 days. Arriving in this country in 1870, he located on a farm in Merrick county where he lived for many years. He retired from active work in 1919, locating in this city. His marriage to Margaret Hein took place on December 7, 1881. Mr. Mewes was a member of Trinity Lutheran church in this city.

He is survived by his bereaved widow, two sons, Herman and Erwin, of this city, six daughters, Mrs. John Dankert, of Worms; Mrs. Carl Launer, of Fremont; Mrs. Otto Schmidt, of this city; Mrs. Erwin Schwyn, of Traverse City, Mich.; Miss Laura Mewes, of this city, and Mrs. Oscar Roeser, jr., also of this city. A brother resides in Germany and two sisters, Mrs. H. Hinerichs, of Chapman, and Mrs. Janssen, of Vancouver, Wash., also survive him, as also eighteen grandchildren.

Impressive funeral services were held from Trinity Lutheran church on East Second street at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Rev. Frese, of Worms, officiating.
