Herbert Fred Boldenow, son of Henry and Louise (Hoger) Boldenow, was born May 3, 1911 on the family farm in Stevens Township, Stevens County, Minnesota. He was baptized on June 4, 1911 in Artichoke Township, and confirmed on Apri 15, 1925 in Glencoe, MN. Herbert received his schooling first at the rural school district #48 in Stevens Township, then at Shible Lutheran School of rural Appleton, and eventually at Glencoe Lutheran School in Glencoe. After his schooling, Herb began working on the family farm. On December 22, 1937, he was united in marriage to Dena Thompson in Sisseton, South Dakota. the couple made their home on Herb's family farm in Stevens Township, where they lived and farmed until his health failed. In 1998, they moved to the Copper Glen Apartments in Montevideo, and Herb later entered the Luther Haven Nursing Home, also in Montevideo.
Herb was a long-time member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio, where he had served on the Church Board. he had also been active on the Stevens Township Board, the Stevens Township United Fund and the Shible Fire Insurance Board.
Herb was an avic hunter and fisherman, and he played baseball with the Artichoke Baseball Team and the Golden Rod Team. He also enjoyed playing cards, and in latter years, he especially enjoyed playing cards with his grandchildren.
Herbert passed away on Friday, October 5, 2001 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo having lived to reach the age of 90 years.
He is survived by his wife: Dena Boldenow of Montevideo; children: Jan (Janet) Boldenow of Plymouth, Joel (Jane) Boldenow of Montevideo and DeAnna (Daniel) Skilbred of North Pole, AK; grandchildren: Jeffey Boldenow, James (Lisa) Boldenow, Ellie Boldenow (Michael) Hubert, Joshua Boldenow, David (Linda) Skilbred, Dawn Skilbred, Dustin Skilbred and Dane Skilbred; great-grandsons: Patrick and Jackson Boldenow; sister: ElLouise Kollmann of Clark, MO; sisters-in-law: Cora Boldenow of Graceville and Irene Boldenow of Downers Grove, IL; his godchildren: Gary Boldenow, Dr. Donald Storm, Karen McGregor and Todd Amborn; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Lulu Johnson, Sylvia Anderson and Edna Ahlvin; and three brothers: Henry, Emil, and Bernard.
