NILES - Arthur G. Layher, 79 of Niles, Michigan died 11:33 p.m., April 5, 2007, in his home of natural causes. He was born to the late Clifford and Loretta (Heeney) Layher on November 28, 1927, in Jackson, MI. On August 20, 1955, in Niles, he married Rita Rotzien, who survives. Also surviving are daughters, Anita (Dale) Backus of Buchanan, MI, Mary (Kevin) Collier of Toledo, OH, and Carol (Chad) Schwierking of Ada, MI; sons, Gary (Linda) Layher of Niles, MI, and Richard (Annette) Layher of Niles, MI; sisters, Jo Ann Atkins of Jackson, MI, and Rose Mary Mack of Jackson, MI; brothers, Jim (Delores) Layher of Jackson, MI, and Frank (Avennell) Layher of Jackson, MI; a sister-in-law, Bernadine Layher of Jackson, MI; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, John B. Layher on December 29, 1986, and Joseph V. Layher on January 25, 1993. Art was a 1956 graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in geology. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Art owned and operated a farm in Bertrand Township for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and model railroads and airplanes in addition to being a member of the Bend of the River Conservation Club, the NRA and St. Mary's Catholic Church, Niles. The funeral service will be Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Niles. Time to visit with the family will be in the Swem Funeral Home on Monday, April 9, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Burial and Military Rites by Post # 51 American Legion will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles. Father David Otto will officiate.
