When he was 16 years old, he moved with his parents to Elkhorn, WI. The following year, he came to Wausau, and lived in that city for 60 years, until his death. He first secured employment as a river pilot, and then with his brother Ed Armstrong, had a mill at Pine River. Later he became boom-master. Following that, he secured the position of local weigh-master for the two railroads running through Wausau. He held that position for 10 years, and then retired.

"Big and bold, Wausau's Armstrong brothers were the best known pilots on the Wisconsin river. There were no rapids too wild or river too wide for Sam, Ed and Walt. Through the years, stories of their feats were told and retold." Wausau Sunday Herald, 5 Mar. 1989.

He was a veteran of the civil war, and served in the Eighth Wisconsin Volunteer Battery, holding the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was of a retiring nature, and as a rule when not on duty, was at home with his family.
Mr. Armstrong was m. twice-first to Margaret DeMott in 1857, who d. ten years later. They had two children, Homer & Edna. He then m. Laura Ann Dexter of Wausau, and five children were born to them.
He was a prominent member of Lysander Cutler Post #55, G.A.R., and a member of the Masonic Order.
Children surviving him were: Homer Armstrong, Portland, OR and Mrs. Robert M.(Edna)Kerr of Pittsburgh, PA, from his first marriage, and Mrs. L. A. (Alla) Drown, New London,WI, Harry D. Armstrong, Topbar SD, Mrs. H. J. Evans, Mrs. Mary Belle Estes, & Miss Gertrude Armstrong, all of Wausau.
