Hazel L. Lien, age 101, of Volga, died Monday, May 23, 2005, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.
Hazel Leona Lien was born August 4, 1903, on a farm near Volga, South Dakota, to Ole and Laura (Eidsmoe) Lien. She was baptized by Rev. Aaberg and confirmed by Rev. Voldal at First Lutheran Church, where she was a member all her life. She attended the Volga Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1921. She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and then taught school. She was later employed by the Volga Creamery as a bookkeeper, retiring from that position in 1970.
Hazel was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church and the W.E.L.C. and church circle. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and cutting quilt blocks for the church. She is survived by friends, including Ruth and Marvin Leite, of Volga. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Esther, Theo, and Lillie; and two brothers, Ellis and Theodore.
