From Vaughan's Funeral Home:

William J. (Bill) Astoria passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at the age of 82.

Born September 20, 1927, in Denver, Co., Bill will be remembered by family and friends as a devoted husband and father. He lived in San Antonio most of his life, but had been a resident of Boerne, Tx. for the past 36 years. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carrie; his three sons David, John, & Mark (Rose); his two daughters Valinda (Rene Presas) and Carol Swartz (Lloyd); 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Bill was very creative and admired art in all its forms. A music lover, he had a great appreciation of classical music, especially classical guitar. He also enjoyed all the great recording artists of the 1930s through the 1980s and had a very extensive collection of songs which he had transferred to CDs.

A terrific handyman, he could fix or repair almost anything...a mechanic, a carpenter, an electrician, a plumber...if he could put his hands on it, he soon understood how it worked. He was an accomplished wood and metal worker, and would spend hours in this shop building all manner of art, puzzles, decorations, and gadgets.

Bill always enjoyed the outdoors and, as a teen, he worked summers as a horse wrangler at Camp Arrowhead near Hunt, Tx. He was an avid fisherman and hunter most of his life, and particularly enjoyed fishing the Texas Coast and guided trips out into the Gulf. In his latter years, he preferred to focus on simply admiring nature, and loved to travel the backroads of South and Central Texas, viewing the scenery and the wildlife. New Mexico was also a favored destination. His father owned a ranch near Taos in the 1930s and Bill never lost his love for the area. He and Carrie traveled there often after his retirement. A voracious reader, he read hundreds of books and was interested in a wide variety of subjects, but history and adventure fiction were always his favorites. Another of his enduring passions was sports...he loved them all, followed the Cowboys faithfully, and, depending on the season, could always be found watching football, baseball, or golf on TV from his favorite chair.

A 25+ year employee of the Texas Highway Dept. (TxDOT), he was very proud of the contribution he and his co-workers made to highway construction around the state.

Bill will be interred at Boerne Cemetary. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in his name to the Hill Country College Fund at Schreiner University @:
