Madison - He fought valiently for his country, in the South Pacific during World War II, and just as courageously against a more recent enemy; cancer. The battle is now over. Parkis George Waterbury passed away Monday, June 24, 2002. He was born June 12, 1923, in Jefferson, Wisconsin, the son of Parkis L. and Ruth (Mueller) Waterbury. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1940 and attended UW Whitewater. Parkis enlisted in the Navy in 1942, attended V-12 Officers School in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, and served as the executive officer abour the LST833 from 1944 to 1946. Upon his return from military duty he completed his degree and married Adele Stroede of Lake Mills, Wisconsin. He was a teacher at Columbus High School from 1947 to 1952 and then in Madison, as Randall Elementary and Cherokee Middle School from 1952 to 1985. Parkis retired from the Naval Reserve in 1972 after attaining the rank of commander. He was a proud member of the Reserve Officer's Association and a charter member of the American Legion Post No. 151. He was a charter member of the Christ Memorial Lutheran Church since 1952, and avid golfer and Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers football fan. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Adele; a daughter, Mary Strobusch, of Waupaca, Wisconsin; four sons, Parkis Robert (Joy) Waterbury of Dalton, Wisconsin, William Waterbury of Madison, Wisconsin, Mark Waterbury of Marietta, Georgia, and Timothy (Kari) Waterbury of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin; and a brother, Edward (Anita) Waterbury of Glendale, California. Parkis loved and cherished his grandchildren, Suzy, Tim, Jessica, Matt, Bryan, Andrew, Ben, Aaron, Meggan and Whitney; and great-grandson, Damien. He is further survived by his cousins, Dick (Marge) Mueller of Jefferson, Wisconsin, and Barbara Mueller, also of Jefferson; as well as many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Many thanks to the staff at St. Mary's Medical Center, Dean Clinic and family and friends who have kept Parkis George in their prayers. He will be long remembered for his devotion to his Savior, his family and his country. Funeral services will be held at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, 2833 Raritan Road, Madison, on Friday, June 28, 2002, at 11 a.m. Pastors Jeff Meyer, Eric Wenger and Gerry Kuhnke will preside. Visitation with the family will be held at the church two hours before the memorial service. Internment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Christ Memoral bus transportation fund or radio station WNWC. (Cress Funeral Service)
