Bessie (Gates) Bjerkness says of her mother, "Mother ran away and married Mr. Betts but never lived with him as a wife as Grandmother (her m other) grabbed her and took her home with her. They lived at Elmira for a long time. Has sister Lottie Ward. I couldn't understand why my folks did what they did with us 3 children. We were all babies you might say. Slapped around by this one and that. I was grateful got a good home. I raised by foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kent. I cried many nights over my brothers and I looked them up. I found Frank or rather Anderson, he goes by Frank Gates, when I was 19. Ellery, I was about 23 years old, when I got to see him.

Mother never liked her real name so went by Etta Mae Gates."
