Gene was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Menan, a son of Henry Edwin Miller and Caroline Gneiting Miller.
He was raised in the Menan area, attending schools in Menan and graduating from Midway High School.
He joined the United States Navy and trained in air-sea rescue.
He married Arlene Lovisa Hunt on Aug. 28, 1946, at Egin, Fremont County, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Jan. 10, 1956.
He farmed in the Menan area, worked on the family farm, milked cows and worked in the potatoes.
He is a high priest in the LDS church where he served as Elders Quorum president, on the Stake High Council, in the bishopric and in the Idaho Falls Temple, and enjoyed singing in the ward choir.
He enjoyed boating on the Snake River, family picnics, music, singing, whistling, horses and nature. He was an avid reader, was very frugal and was a great storyteller. He had a great work ethic, which he taught all of his children. He also sang at hundreds of funerals with Ruth Shippen.
He is survived by four daughters, Jalene (Keith) Shuldberg of Terreton, Marcene (Danny) Ferguson of Shelton, Denece (Kerry) Hunter of Caldwell and Kristine (Mike) Summa of Rigby; six sons, Ronald H. (Marie) Miller of Pocatello, Marvin G. (Lynette) Miller of Ririe, Gary W. (Julie) Miller of Firth, Robert Drew (Karen) Miller of Jerome, Blaine E. (Carolanne) Miller of Eden, Idaho, and Karl E. (Dyla) Miller of Boise; two sisters, Caroline Luana (Garn) Thueson of Annis and Faun (William) Dutson of Iona; two sisters-in-law, Neta Miller of Annis and Nelda Miller of Shelley; 61 grandchildren; and 85 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene Hunt Miller; four sisters, Belva, Velma, Eunice and Arzula; three brothers, Ray, Elden and DeLoy; a son-in-law, Kevin Wrathalland; and one grandson, Eric Shuldberg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in the Menan LDS Stake Center, 698 N. 3600 East in Menan, with Bishop Gary Asper officiating. The family will visit with friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Eckersell Memorial Chapel, 101 W. Main St. in Rigby, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Menan Stake Center. Burial will be in Annis-Little Butte Cemetery under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel.
