August Uebel was born in Liedolsheim, Germany, a small village located twelve miles north of the city of Karlsruhe in the modern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. He took part in the German revolutions of 1848-49, fighting in the "Freikorps" led by August Willich. After the defeat of the revolutionary forces, he lived in exile in France until 1854, at which point he managed to emigrate to the United States, arriving in New Orleans. In 1855 he settled in Rochester, New York (where his sister was living) and the following year he married Elizabeth Gnaedinger, who was born in Feldkirch, Austria. Two of the witnesses to the marriage were J. J. Bausch and Henry Lomb, the founders of the famous optical company, whom he knew through his involvement in the Rochester Turnverein. August was a tailor by trade. He worked for companies and also in partnership with other tailors. For a time he and his son Ottmar operated a business under the name of Uebel & Son.
