Peter F. McCanna, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away at age 88, on Saturday, October 23, 2010.
Peter is survived by daughters, Ellen Jones of Riverton, WY and Janet McCanna of Santa Fe, NM, grandson, Christopher Jones and his wife, Francesca of Riverton, WY, three great-grandchildren, Brett, Aidan and Ashlyn and his sister, Janet King and her husband, Vernon of Albuquerque.
Peter was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph E. McCanna Jr. and sister, Peggy Brennan, both of Albuquerque. Peter was a member of a pioneer Albuquerque family that has been connected with the real estate and insurance business here since the late 1800s that his grandfather, P.F. McCanna began. Since the end of World War II, Peter had been with P.F. McCanna Inc. until he began his own establishment of Peter McCanna and Co. real estate and insurance firm in 1963.
Peter was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary High School, where he was a basketball star and also played football. Peter played two years of basketball at the University of New Mexico before entering the Coast Guard in 1942. Peter was a quartermaster on ships in the Pacific during World War II. Peter was one of the Founders and a Director of Casa Angelica, President and Director of the Better Business Bureau, Council Vice-president and Director of St. Josephs Hospital, Director of the YMCA Board, Board President and Director of the Albuquerque Downtown Association, Director and Member of the Kiwanis Club, Campaign Chairman of The Peopless Committee that elected Pete Domenici, Harry Kinney and John Gurule to the Albuquerque City Commission, Vice-president of the Albuquerque Zoning Commission, Director of the Albuquerque Urban Renewal Board, Director of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Family Health Center Board, Director of The Private Industry Council, Director of St. Francis Gardens Health Center, Chairman of the 1993 St. Mary's Centennial, member of the Board of Directors of the Home Savings and Loan Board, Second Vice-president of the New Mexico Insurers Inc, on Board of Directors for Sandia Savings and Loan, President and Director of the New Mexico Association of Insurance Agents, Vice-president of the Albuquerque Board of Realtors, received Realtor of the Year in 1965, second person in the State to receive his CCIM Designation, President of the CCIM & CPM Boards, and Director of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Mexico.
Rosary will be recited on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at French ~ Wyoming Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 619 Copper Avenue NW, with interment to follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith Blvd. NE, Albuquerque. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Casa Angelica, 5629 Isleta Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87105.
