SOPHIA M. BLOCK
(1818 - 1907)

Again another old German settler of our town has passed. Mrs. Julius Block closed her tired eyes in the final sleep on Thursday last week.

Mrs. Block was born Marie Sophie Schultz on 26 May 1818 in Stavenhagen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, therefore she reached the age of 89 years 4 months and 29 days. In 1846 she married her now surviving husband, Julius C. Block, with whom she came to America in 1853. The family first settled in Buffalo, New York, but only remained there 5 months before they moved west to make their residence in Chicago. The family stayed there until 1854, and then in 1855 the family moved to Manitowoc where the deceased has lived for 52 years. Her husband operated a tailoring business until age made that profession impossible and then established a sweet shop.

In recent years the deceased grew weaker and weaker and then caught a terrible chill several weeks ago which her weakened body could not fend off, resulting in death.

In addition to her elderly husband she is survived by a son Philipp A. Block in La Crosse, a daughter here - Mrs. R.A. Otto, as well as a host of friends she made over the years. On Sunday she was carried to her final rest.

(There is a thank you ad in this edition, especially thanking Carl H. Paulus for delivering the graveside oration. It is signed by Julius G. Block, husband; Philipp A. Block, son; Mrs. A. Otto, daughter.)

Philipp A. Block of La Crosse, son of Julius Block here, together with his wife were recent visitors in our city. The reason for his visit to his old hometown was a sad one in that he was attending his mother's funeral. Mr. Block has for many years been the proprietor of a large brewery in La Crosse, but still has many friends here.
