Louis Avery Corning III, 85, of New Bern, NC passed away peacefully on July 13, 2012. Born September 2, 1926 in Sumter, SC to Jane Olmsted and Louis Avery Corning Jr., Louis moved with his family to Hamlet, NC in 1935 where he grew up and worked in the family's business, Buttercup Ice Cream.
Upon high school graduation in 1944, he joined the US Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Louis attended N.C. State University and graduated in Industrial Engineering in 1950. In 1949, he married Emma Madelon Hamilton of Hamlet, NC, and they enjoyed and celebrated 57 years of marriage.
Louis's distinguished career began with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph in Tarboro, NC in 1950 and continued for 35 years with positions in New Bern, N.C. and Bristol, Tenn. He was highly regarded and well known throughout the telephone industry. Louis served as President of both the Virginia and the Tennessee Telephone Associations and was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers. He retired in 1985 as Vice President of Operations of United Telephone's Southeast US Group and continued his telephone involvement as a consultant for years after retirement.
Louis valued community involvement and was a proud Sigma Pi at N.C. State, a Jaycee in Tarboro and New Bern, a Rotarian, served as President of the Chamber of Commerce in Bristol, President of New Bern Golf and County Club, Commodore of the Eastern Carolina Yacht Club, was a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA , taught Sunday School, served on numerous boards and committees, was a SCORE volunteer and was active in a host of other associations and organizations.
He and Madelon returned to life on the water in New Bern in 1985 and spent many years traveling the east coast waterways on their boat, the MadLou. Louis enjoyed tennis, golf, fishing, his bluebirds, engaging with others, and a good laugh. He especially loved being with his children, grandchildren, and new great-grandchild, and kept connected with those he shared life with along the way. Louis will be remembered for his humor and the zest he brought to every facet of his full and eventful life.
Predeceased by his parents and his dear wife, Madelon, Louis is survived by his appreciative children; daughters, Mary Jane Corning Rosenbaum (Al) of Oakton, Va. and Beth Corning of Durham, NC; and son, Avery Corning of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, Amanda Rosenbaum Galston (Matt) of Leesburg, VA, Adam Rosenbaum (Katie) of Stone Ridge, VA, Elizabeth Dellert Walder of London, England, Hamilton and Natalie Corning of New Bern, NC; and great-grandchild, Marshall Galston of Leesburg, VA.
The Corning children express heartfelt thanks to their father's wonderful friends for their lifelong fellowship and to his special caregivers who made his last year so comfortable.
Graveside inurnment will be Thursday, August 2, 11:30 a.m. at Mary Love Cemetery in Hamlet, N.C. with reception following at All Saints Episcopal Church. On Friday, August 3, at 2:30 p.m., a Celebration of Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in New Bern, NC.
