John Tinsley Coleman's grandfather, Richard Hawes, was Governor of Kentucky during the Civil War. After attending Norwood High School in Nelson, John entered Virginia Polytechnic Institute, then graduated in law from the University of Virginia in 1881. He practiced for a number of years in Nelson County, before removing to Lynchburg in 1894. The Democrat was Director of Peoples National Bank in Lynchburg, and served as a member with the house of delegates from Nelson in the general assembly of Virginia.
