Jesse Thomas Blackshear was the son of Edward Pinkney and Nettie Catherine (Melton) Blackshear. His parents died when he was six years old. His mother died first and then his father undertook to take his three children, Sam, Jesse, and Nora back to Arkansas where they had lived. On the trail back by wagon, Edward Pinkney Blackshear died. He had livestock that escaped during the rain and he chased them even though he had the measles. Complications set in and he died. The three children were divided up and given to separate relatives. Sam to the Melton family, Nora to a family in Oklahoma, and Jesse to an aunt, Frances (Blackshear) Carr in Lawrence County, Arkansas. He first married Jessie Bush, daughter of William Bush and Mary Elizabeth Noblin. Jessie Bush died in 1915 and Jesse married Matra (Westerfield) Blackshear on 30 Dec 1916. For most of his life Jesse was a farmer but after 1942 he became a merchant, owning grocery stores, cafes, and a service station. Jesse was always a hard worker and at the age of thirteen he was driving a mule team dragging logs out of the woods to a sawmill. He was very protective of his entire family, wife and children. He lived in Lawrence County until 1942 and then moved to Craighead County. After 1956 he and his wife, Matra, moved back to Lawrence County (Hoxie) Arkansas
