Obituary In Memory of Martin Edward Schumacher Published in the Seattle Times from October 2 to October 3, 2011
Martin Edward Schumacher was born in Seattle on October 11, 1918 and died on September 28, 2011. He'd had some health issues since the beginning of the year which were finally too difficult to overcome; however, his final hours were calm and peaceful.
Ed was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on Capitol Hill in Seattle, and also attended parochial elementary school there. He was proud to be a graduate of Queen Anne High School. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, in the Pacific at Hickam Field on Oahu, Hawaii. Ed had several careers, but was primarily a typesetter, both at the Seattle Times and the East Side Journal when it first began circulation. At his death he was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Bellevue, and was an enthusiastic member of the Wednesday lawn and garden crew there. He was a devout and lifelong Christian who was proud to share his faith. Over the years he served several church congregations as a Sunday School teacher, elder, and a variety of leadership positions.
Ed met his wife of 70 years, Helen Jewell, through her father Clarence when the 3 of them worked at what was then National Biscuit Company in Seattle. They were married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the Jewell family home in Kirkland on September 7, 1941.
Ed is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters Beth Fox, Kate Palevich, and JES Schumacher. Grandchildren are Patrick Fox, Matthew Fox, Meghan Varhalmi, Jed Palevich and Kristian Brevik. Great- grandchildren are Aerin and Joanna Varhalmi, and Andrew Fox. Other survivors include his sister, Beth Brandon, and a wonderful large family on both the Jewell and Schumacher sides.
Memorial donations in Ed's name may be made c/o the All Saints Building Fund, 5501 - 148th Avenue NE, Bellevue, WA 98007. Arrangements under the direction of Sunset Hills Funeral Home, Bellevue, WA.
