MANITOWOC - Morton Kenneth Berge, age 92, of Manitowoc, passed away Monday,
March 5, 2001, at Oakwood Lutheran Nursing Home in Madison, Wisconsin.
He was born November 24, 1908, in the town of Cato, Wisconsin, son of Knute and
Marie Berge. He graduated from Valders High School, attended Oshkosh University
and graduated from Manitowoc Business College. On September 14, 1935, he married
Amanda Etta Peterson. He worked for the Manitowoc National Bank and the Manitowoc
Savings Bank, retiring in 1970. Mr. Berge served as treasurer of First Lutheran
Church and the Manitowoc chapter of the American Cancer Society for many years.
He was also a volunteer for the Red Cross and the Manitowoc Senior Center. He
was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Manitowoc Men's Garden Society, a men's
prayer group, Sons of Norway and the Optimists Club.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Mary Berge, Madison; son,
Harry Berge, Captiva Island, Florida; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and William
Claypool, St. Louis, Missouri, and Ann and James Schleis, Beloit, Wisconsin; nine
grandchildren, Robert (Lisa) and Maren Berge, Amanda and William Claypool, Kevin
(Stephanie) and Todd (Mary) Berge, and Scott (Tina), Owen and Eric Schleis; nine
great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Logan, Christina, Brianna, Jack, Erin, Phillip,
William and Spencer; a sister, Edna Elsasser, Waukegan, Illinois; and a special
friend, Alice Gauthier, Manitowoc. He was preceded in death by his parents; his
wife, Amanda; a daughter, Mary; three brothers, Harry, Chester and Gordon Berge;
and three sisters, Olga Hacker, and Agnes and Luella Berge.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at FIRST LUTHERAN
CHURCH, North Eighth Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Steven Solberg will officiate.
Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m.
until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made in his name to First Lutheran Church, Manitowoc;
Oakwood Lutheran Home, Madison; or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's
Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 477737, New York, NY 10163.

Morton was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be
greatly missed by his family and friends.
