Anna Evangeline Hubin was born September 18, 1908, at Indianola, Warren County, Iowa, the eldest child of John D. and Elva Stouffer Hubin. She was named Anna for her maternal grandmother, but was always called Evangeline. She was less than a year old when her parents moved to Cottonwood County, Minnesota, and nine years old when the family moved to Louriston Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota.
She married Clarence Edward Neal on February 22, 1933. For many years they farmed near Shakopee Lake in Chippewa County, during which time six children were born. They were members of Buffalo Lake Covenant Church; after retiring they moved to Kerkhoven in Swift County, where they were members of the Kerkhoven Evangelical Free Church. Vange and Clarence frequently sang duets together, which she accompanied on the guitar. She was also well known and loved for her cooking.
Evangeline spent her final years in a nursing home. On March 14, 1997, she visited with her youngest daughter and son-in-law. The following morning (March 15) she passed away quietly while waiting for her breakfast.
She was preceded in death by Clarence, both parents, infant daughter Elva and grandson Duane Wubben, and by all seven brothers. She was survived by sons Clarence Jr., Wesley (Ann), and Kenneth (Ruth); daughters Lavilla (Kenneth) Wubben and Rosann (Gale) Olson; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Grace Thayer, Kathryn Peterson, Helen Anderson, and Ruth (Frank) Thayer; nieces and nephews.
