BUCYRUS: Karen M. Volkmer, 75, of Bucyrus, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center following an extended illness.

She was born April 24, 1937 in Bucyrus to the late Paul C. and Mary A. (LaRue) Kline and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1955. At the age of 12, Karen being a Girl Scout asked a young boy named Jerry A. Volkmer to her Girl Scout dance and from that moment on, they were sweethearts. They married on October 22, 1955 and for the past 57 years; they have laughed, loved life, raised a family and worked various jobs together.

Karen's life was her family and she spent many years caring for them as a homemaker. She also worked at Swan Rubber and Crawford County National Bank for a number of years. After her boys grew, Karen assisted her husband as a bookkeeper with their various businesses; J & K Carwash, Walnut House Antiques (which gave them the pleasure of traveling 17 states while doing business) and JKV Auctions, where she also managed the company website.

Karen was a caring and compassionate lady who didn't require many material things; in fact her one desire other than family was to go to Hawaii and Jerry saw to it that her wish was carried out. She enjoyed traveling, perch fishing at Lake Erie, reading, and collecting cut glass. Karen also had a big heart for animals and liked to support the local humane society.

Karen is survived by her best friend Jerry; two sons, Bret A. Volkmer of Bucyrus and Brad P. Volkmer and wife Kathy of Huntsville, Alabama; one granddaughter, Terra L. (Kenneth) Sandlin of Troy, Ohio and their children, Klaire and Quinn Sandlin and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Rowland of Bucyrus.

In addition to her parents, Karen is preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Ray and Naomi (Morton) Volkmer; a daughter-in-law, Beth A. Volkmer and a brother-in-law, Ellsworth Rowland.

Her family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 29 at Wise Funeral Service, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday with Rev. Steven E. Voelker officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Humane Society serving Crawford County through the funeral home.
